Three Types of Matter

There are three types of matter. They are elements, mixtures and compounds.  An element is made up of only one type of atom.  For example pure gold  is only made up of atoms that have 70 protons.  A compound is made up of the atoms of 2 or more elements that have been chemically combined.  The elements in a compound are always combined in a fixed ratio.  This means for every particle of baking soda is made up of one atom of sodium, one atom of hydrogen, and one atom of carbon and three atoms of oxygen.  A mixture is made up of two kinds of matter that are physically combined.  For example a salad is a mixture of matter that is physically combined.
