Ancient Egypt is one of the most well known of the early civilizations. Pharaohs, mummies and pyramids were all a part of this ancient culture.
Egypt located in northeastern Africa, is bordered on the north by the Mediterranean Sea and on the east by the Red Sea. This early civilization settled along the Nile River. The Nile river was very important to the Egyptians since its overflowing deposited silt along its banks. This silt or rich soil allowed them to farm. Cotton was just one of the crops grown by the early Egyptians. Their government was very organized. They were ruled by pharaohs. There was even a woman pharaoh whose name was Hatshepsut. She acted as pharaoh since her stepson was too young. Statues of her show her wearing a false beard. The Egyptians were polytheistic. That means they believed in many gods. They also believed in an afterlife. That is why their tombs, known as pyramids, were filled with food, jewelry, clothing and even furniture for their new life. Hieroglyphics were used to keep records and they were written on a reed like material called papyrus. We learned a lot studying about the Egyptians
